{"id":157711,"date":"2017-02-15T12:27:53","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T10:27:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=157711"},"modified":"2017-02-15T12:27:53","modified_gmt":"2017-02-15T10:27:53","slug":"sa-human-rights-commission-tackles-racism-on-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/157711\/sa-human-rights-commission-tackles-racism-on-social-media\/","title":{"rendered":"SA Human Rights Commission tackles racism on social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The South African Human Rights Commission will host a two-day national hearing on racism and social media in Braamfontein, Johannesburg on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>This follows several incidents of racism on social media which have been reported in the media and have caused uproar in the country.<\/p>\n<p>A meme mocking the death of former Springbok captain Joost van der Westhuizen enraged Twitter users last week.<\/p>\n<p>The meme, which depicts Spiderman actor Tobey Maguire grinning with the caption \u201cMe when I hear a white man has died\u201d, was shared by Riaan Lucas.<\/p>\n<p>Last year KwaZulu-Natal realtor Penny Sparrow was at the centre of a race row that gripped the country.<\/p>\n<p>She described black beachgoers as &#8220;monkeys&#8221;, in a Facebook post reacting to litter left behind after New Year\u2019s celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>High Court Judge Mabel Jansen was also accused of making racist comments about black people and rape on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Jansen said: &#8220;In their culture a woman is there to pleasure them. Period.
