{"id":159461,"date":"2017-02-22T10:49:01","date_gmt":"2017-02-22T08:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=159461"},"modified":"2017-02-22T10:52:19","modified_gmt":"2017-02-22T08:52:19","slug":"the-incredible-gifts-malema-ramaphosa-and-other-politicians-received-over-the-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/159461\/the-incredible-gifts-malema-ramaphosa-and-other-politicians-received-over-the-last-year\/","title":{"rendered":"The incredible gifts Malema, Ramaphosa and other politicians received over the last year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Parliament has released the register of members\u2019 interest for 2016, detailing the incredible land, trips and gifts\u00a0that South African politicians have legally had to declare over the past year, according to a report by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24.com\/SouthAfrica\/News\/happy-socks-toilet-paper-booze-and-more-booze-mps-declare-almost-everything-20170221\" target=\"_blank\">News24<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Joint Committee on Ethics and Members\u2019 Interests adopted the register last week in accordance with the Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members\u2019 Interests for Assembly and Permanent Council Members and presented their findings on Tuesday, 21 February.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly alcohol was the most popular gift given to South African politicians but other unusual presents included socks, traditional weapons, binoculars and toilet paper.<\/p>\n<p>The full report is expected to release to the public later this week, in which the complete declarations and amounts will be provided. It has already been confirmed that\u00a0President Jacob Zuma&#8217;s name does not feature.<\/p>\n<p>You can find the most unusual and high-profile declarations detailed below:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Julius Malema<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Julius-Malema.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42987 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Julius-Malema.png\" alt=\"Julius Malema\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Julius-Malema.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Julius-Malema-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Compared to most of the politicians on the list, Julius Malema had little to disclose, with\u00a0no notable gifts, land, travel, sponsorships, benefits, contracts or pensions declared.<\/p>\n<p>He did however\u00a0declare a number of shares and trusts, according to the report, including an interest in the Kopano Charity trust, the Ratanang Family trust, the Mazimbu Investment trust and the Munshedzi family trust.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Baleka Mbete<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Baleka-Mbete.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-93713 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Baleka-Mbete.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Baleka-Mbete.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Baleka-Mbete-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete did not declare any land, directorships, partnerships or sponsorships. However she did receive a large amount of gifts this past year including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clothing &#8211; including dresses, flip-flops and scarfs;<\/li>\n<li>Books;<\/li>\n<li>Sculptures;<\/li>\n<li>CDs;<\/li>\n<li>An assortment of wines and champagne;<\/li>\n<li>Chinese tea bottles;<\/li>\n<li>Serviettes;<\/li>\n<li>Table cloths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Cyril Ramaphosa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Cyril-Ramaphosa-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-103707 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Cyril-Ramaphosa-2.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Cyril-Ramaphosa-2.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Cyril-Ramaphosa-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa declared shares worth more than\u00a0R132 million across various investments. The list also includes the ownership of\u00a032 properties, trusteeship in four local trusts, directorship in at least 5 companies and two local McDonalds franchises.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Mmusi Maimane<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/DA-Maimane-march.png\"><img Mmusi Maimane\u00a0declared two houses in Roodepoort, a number of hospitality items as well as several gifts including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two paintings worth R10,000 and R6,000;<\/li>\n<li>A R6,000 Fabiani suit, shirt and tie as a gift directly from the designer;<\/li>\n<li>A bow and arrow worth R200;<\/li>\n<li>3 pairs of happy socks delivered on a monthly basis;<\/li>\n<li>Bourbon worth R250.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Malusi Gigaba<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Malusi-Gigaba.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-52621 size-full\" was also in the process of buying another house in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The gifts he declared include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An assortment of wines and champagnes;<\/li>\n<li>A 12-year Johnnie Walker Black Label;<\/li>\n<li>A number of clothing items including socks, scarfs and ties;<\/li>\n<li>Several books.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Other of military veterans Kebby Maphatsoe received two shields from Pakistan, a R120 Parker pen, and binoculars worth R450 from OTT armoured vehicles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Transport Minister Dipuo Peters received, among other gifts: bath essentials, a decorated ostrich egg, a miniature tea set, and a cookbook.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe&#8217;s gifts included a glass horn, a box of chocolates, wine, flights, and accommodation for an Australian tour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Communications Minister Faith Muthambi received no fewer than three match
