{"id":159641,"date":"2017-02-22T14:57:40","date_gmt":"2017-02-22T12:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=159641"},"modified":"2017-02-22T14:58:37","modified_gmt":"2017-02-22T12:58:37","slug":"universities-get-more-government-money-for-poor-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/159641\/universities-get-more-government-money-for-poor-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Universities get more government money for poor students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Treasury will allocate R16.1 billion to education, of the total R30 billion reprioritised expenditure by government for Budget 2017.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Budget, Treasury will fund additional allocations to higher education with R6.6 billion in 2017\/18 and R7 billion in 2018\/19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApart from debt servicing cost, post-school education is the fastest growing spending category, followed by health and social protection,\u201d the budget read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough the fiscal envelope is constrained, billions of rands have been shifted to meet new needs,\u201d explained Gordhan.<\/p>\n<p>Treasury has identified resources to provide R16.9 billion in 2017\/18 and R23.1 billion in 2018\/19. This is to \u201csafeguard\u201d the provision of social services, improve public health programmes and lessen the costs of higher education students, specifically from low and middle income households and to maintain infrastructure investment.<\/p>\n<p>One source of reallocated funds is contingency reserves, drawdowns on these for the medium term comes to R9 billion and R4 billion for 2017\/18.<\/p>\n<p>A second source of funding is provisional allocations made in Budget 2016.
