New Zealand is often ranked as the best country to live and raise children, and is a popular immigration choice among South Africans due to its low levels of crime, an outdoor lifestyle bias and a shared love for rugby.<\/p>\n

Data published by StatsSA<\/a> shows that New Zealand is the fourth most popular destination for South African emigrants, behind Australia, the United Kingdom, and the Unites States.<\/p>\n

According to the 2013 New Zealand Census<\/a>, there were 54,276 South African-born residents in New Zealand, or 1.36% of the country’s population. This figure is up from a mere 2,190 South Africans recorded in the 1961 census.<\/p>\n

South Africans make up the fifth largest source of New Zealand immigrants behind the United Kingdom, China, India, and Australia in a country of a total population of less than five million.<\/p>\n

According to a report<\/a>, the majority of South African immigrants have come to the island nation since the end of apartheid – as many as 90%.<\/p>\n

ENZ.org, which claims to be the biggest independent source of information for people moving to New Zealand, said that as many as 3,200 South Africans moved to the country in 2016.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The bulk of South Africans living in New Zealand chose to live in the country’s biggest city, Auckland, followed by Waikato, and the capital, Wellington.<\/p>\n

Late last year, New Zealand took the decision to withdraw its visa free travel arrangements for South African passport holders, meaning that visitors\/tourists now need to apply and pay for a visa before visiting friends and family living in the land of the long white cloud.<\/p>\n

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba then announced in December that South Africa would reciprocate by withdrawing the visa exemption which New Zealand passport holders enjoy.<\/p>\n
