A letter seen by the paper points to a complete breakdown in the relationship between Moyane and Gordhan, where the former ignores all requirements to answer to Gordhan, and instead goes to Zuma. He reportedly wants a retired judge to act as a mediator between the two of them.

The DA in Johannesburg has slammed the ANC after some of its members stormed the city council chambers on Thursday and vandalised the building. The members were protesting against city mayor Herman Mashaba for shutting down the Jozi@Work programme, saying he served only white interests. The DA accused the ANC of being behind the protest, calling it an attack on democracy and saying its activity in Joburg is only good for thuggery and violence.

Opposition parties have warned that having ANC MP Brian Molefe in any position within finance is a clear threat to the financial security of the country. It is speculated that Molefe will join the finance portfolio committee, replacing an ANC member that was recently redeployed, before moving on to the role as deputy finance minister. This will give him access to the R1.7 trillion controlled by the Public Investment Corporation. The DA, in particular, said that the Gupta family would be thrilled to have Molefe sitting there.

South Africa is on the cusp of another outbreak of xenophobic violence, as residents in Pretoria get ready to march against foreigners in the city. There have already been reports of attacks against foreign nationals in the area, with reports of retaliatory attacks against South Africans happening in Nigeria, affecting businesses like MTN. President Zuma has condemned the violence, but tensions are mounting.

South Africa’s rand hit an 18-month high against the dollar on Thursday as the greenback slipped after minutes of the latest U.S. Federal Reserve meeting showed policymakers in no rush to raise interest rates. On Friday, the rand was trading at R12.87 to the dollar, R16.17 to the pound and R13.62 to the euro.

SARS head Tom Moyane refuses to answer to finance minister Pravin Gordhan; the DA is accusing ANC members of storming the Joburg council; opposition parties are warning against putting ANC MP Brian Molefe anywhere near finance; and tensions are rising amid renewed xenophobic attacks in SA.

[9872,11121,23
26
post-160083","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-finance","category-government","tag-headline
["GET
