{"id":160585,"date":"2017-02-27T11:41:13","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T09:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=160585"},"modified":"2017-02-27T11:51:49","modified_gmt":"2017-02-27T09:51:49","slug":"dont-trust-south-africas-rotten-economy-warns-tax-head","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/160585\/dont-trust-south-africas-rotten-economy-warns-tax-head\/","title":{"rendered":"Something is rotten in SA&#8217;s economy, warns tax head"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s tax ombudsman, Judge Bernard Ngoepe, has pointed to several danger signs\u00a0that\u00a0show &#8220;South Africa\u2019s economy is not well&#8221;, according to a report by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fin24.com\/Economy\/something-is-rotten-in-rsa-cautions-tax-ombud-20170226\" target=\"_blank\">News24<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a Leader\u2019s Angle event hosted by the University of Stellenbosch Business School,\u00a0Ngoepe noted that a huge national deficit, high unemployment rate and growing dependence on social grants were clear warning signs of something being &#8220;rotten&#8221; in South Africa&#8217;s economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe (South Africans) must say to ourselves that our economy is not okay,\u201d said Ngoepe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the basis for tax collection is that we are forced to pay it, but I think people should also feel morally obliged to pay tax. If we don\u2019t spend tax prudently, then people will begin to justify their reluctance to pay tax.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do we really live in a politically stable country that allows for a healthy economy?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are becoming a corrupted society.
