Arrive Alive has released a series of time-lapse videos showing\u00a0the busiest roads and highways in\u00a0Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, and the best time of day to avoid them.<\/p>\n

The data is based on TomTom location data and\u00a0its recently released Traffic Index 2017, showing which cities in South Africa experience the worst traffic congestion.<\/p>\n

While Johannesburg is\u00a0South Africa\u2019s most populous\u00a0city, Cape Town remains\u00a0the most traffic-congested city in the country, with the index\u00a0registering marked improvement in Johannesburg’s\u00a0ranking.<\/p>\n

\u201cInfrastructure development is a major contributing factor to Johannesburg\u2019s improved ranking in the TomTom Traffic Index,\u201d said Megan Bruwer, project coordinator for the Stellenbosch Smart Mobility Laboratory.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, Open Road Tolling and numerous ITS applications implemented along freeway corridors have also had a positive impact on traffic congestion, not to mention the establishment of the Gautrain,\u201d Bruwer said<\/p>\n

Joburg remains among the top 100 most congested cities in the world, however.<\/p>\n
