Two South African pigeon farmers paid a record R5 million to buy a racing pigeon in Belgium.<\/p>\n

The Belgian pigeon, called “Golden Prince” was put up for auction by\u00a0conservation group Pipa, and with a closing bid of \u20ac360,000 (R4.94 million), has now become the most expensive pigeon ever sold, replacing the former record holder “Bolt”, which sold for \u20ac310,000 (R4.25 million) in 2010.<\/p>\n

According to Pipa, the winning bidders were South Africans Mark Kitchenbrand and Samuel Mbiza, two pigeon farmers from Gauteng, who outbid a Chinese syndicate in the auction.<\/p>\n

Belgium enjoys a long-time tradition in the breeding of racing pigeons, and buyers often come from all over the world to acquire them.<\/p>\n

Golden Prince’s previous owner was Gino Clicque, a Belgian breeder from Wevelgem, who auctioned off 405 of his pigeons online – for a combined price of R30 million.<\/p>\n

The bird was described as “one of the best long distance pigeons ever”.<\/p>\n
