{"id":163251,"date":"2017-03-09T13:21:31","date_gmt":"2017-03-09T11:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=163251"},"modified":"2017-03-09T14:00:03","modified_gmt":"2017-03-09T12:00:03","slug":"this-is-what-really-happens-to-corrupt-government-officials-once-theyve-been-caught","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/163251\/this-is-what-really-happens-to-corrupt-government-officials-once-theyve-been-caught\/","title":{"rendered":"This is what really happens to corrupt government officials once they&#8217;ve been caught"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African Minister of Public Enterprises Malusi Gigaba has revealed\u00a0the number of\u00a0misconduct and corruption activities reported to the national disclosure framework and corruption hotline over the past 13 years.<\/p>\n<p>Gigaba was highlighting data between September 2004 and January 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a\u00a0Governance and Administration Cluster media briefing on Thursday (9 March), the minister noted that the overall declaration rate by the national and provincial departments stood at <strong>98%<\/strong> in the 2015\/2016 financial year.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of corruption cases however, stemmed from the National Anti-Corruption Hotline\u00a0(NACH) with\u00a0<strong>18,778<\/strong> cases referred to government departments as of\u00a031 January 2017. Of these\u00a0<strong>17,240 (92%)<\/strong> cases were received\u00a0while <strong>16,947 (90%)<\/strong> cases were closed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The closure rate underscores a commitment by government departments to investigate allegations of corruption as reported through the NACH,&#8221; said Gigaba.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The successful investigation of cases of alleged corruption reported to the NACH resulted in the recovery of <strong>R410 million<\/strong> from perpetrators.
