Telkom SA<\/a> is expanding its superfast broadband services to subscribers throughout South Africa and Alcatel-Lucent<\/a> will supply the network equipment to enable this network transformation.<\/p>\n

The project \u2013 which is part of Telkom\u2019s strategic \u2018Network Transformation Initiative\u2019 – includes upgrading the existing access network with new-generation VDSL2 technology serving 4.4 million subscribers.<\/p>\n

Where commercially viable Telkom says it will also include the introduction of gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technologies to support fibre-to-the-home (FTTH)<\/a> capabilities.<\/p>\n

These new technologies will be key enablers for potential future services such as Video on Demand, IPTV, and high quality voice services<\/p>\n

Alcatel-Lucent said in a press statement that it is providing Telkom SA with its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) product family, which supports passive optical networking (PON) and digital subscriber line (DSL)<\/a> technologies on the same platform.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Alcatel-Lucent\u2019s ISAM product family, Telkom SA can support a mix of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) and fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) deployment models. The ISAM family is a cornerstone of Alcatel-Lucent\u2019s High Leverage NetworkTM architecture,\u201d stated Alcatel-Lucent.<\/p>\n
