{"id":167045,"date":"2017-04-02T19:00:10","date_gmt":"2017-04-02T17:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=167045"},"modified":"2017-04-03T09:34:18","modified_gmt":"2017-04-03T07:34:18","slug":"how-much-money-petrol-attendants-and-cashiers-earn-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/167045\/how-much-money-petrol-attendants-and-cashiers-earn-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How much money petrol attendants and cashiers earn in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent report by the South African Petroleum Industry Association (SAPIA) found that the fuel sector currently supports the employment of over 100,000 people directly or indirectly across the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the majority of those employed by the industry\u00a0are\u00a0petrol attendants\u00a0who earn a set minimum weekly wage.\u00a0Based on a previous BusinessTech <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/111527\/how-much-money-petrol-attendants-earn-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a><\/strong>, the majority of these attendants are young men, with an average age of 27.<\/p>\n<p>More than half had worked in the same position for in excess of five years, while individual salaries can reach R9,000 per month, depending on which company they work for.<\/p>\n<p>While petrol stations can differ on how much they pay based on individual ownership, currently the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mibco.org.za\/images\/PDF\/2016\/2016.18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">prescribed <\/a><\/strong>minimum wage as set out on 6 December 2016 is <strong>R1,126.35 per week as a petrol attendant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, cashiers can expect to earn slightly more with a prescribed weekly wage of <strong>R1,207.35<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>The cost to\u00a0the motorist<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Due to the relatively low minimum wage and the fact that petrol stations are considered a service industry, it has become common practice for South African motorists to\u00a0tip petrol attendants as the workers perform many \u201ccomplimentary\u201d services.<\/p>\n<p>This can include the replacement of oil and water, engine check-ups, the filling of air in tires and the cleaning of the vehicles windows &#8211;
