At $18 trillion, it represents a quarter share of the global economy (24.3%), according to the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/databank.worldbank.org\/data\/reports.aspx?Code=NY.GDP.MKTP.CD&amp;id=af3ce82b&amp;report_name=Popular_indicators&amp;populartype=series&amp;ispopular=y\">World Bank figures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>China follows, with $11 trillion, or 14.8% of the world economy. Japan is in third place with an economy of $4.4 trillion, which represents almost 6% of the world economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>European countries take the next three places on the list: Germany in fourth position, with a $3.3 trillion economy; the United Kingdom in fifth with $2.9 trillion; and France in sixth with $2.4 trillion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>India is in seventh place with $2 trillion, and Italy in eighth with an economy of over $1.8 trillion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Ninth place goes to Brazil, with an almost $1.8 trillion economy, and in 10th is Canada, with an economy of over $1.5 trillion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The economy of the United States is larger than the combined economies of numbers three to 10 on the list.<\/p>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><b>Fastest-growing economy<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The US may not dominate for much longer, however.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Although China trails the US by $7 trillion, it\u2019s catching up. China\u2019s economy grew by 6.7% in 2016, compared with America\u2019s 1.6%, according to the IMF.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>China has also <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/indiarealtime\/2017\/01\/16\/india-is-no-longer-the-worlds-fastest-growing-economy-imf-says\/\">overtaken India as the fastest-growing large economy<\/a>. The IMF\u2019s World Economic Outlook estimated China\u2019s economy grew at 6.7% in 2016, compared with India\u2019s 6.6%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Brazil\u2019s economy has contracted in the last year by 3.5%, the only one in the top 10 to do so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The chart above shows the world\u2019s 40 biggest economies individually, but grouped by colour into continents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The Asian bloc clearly has a larger share than anywhere else, representing just over a third (33.84%) of global GDP. That\u2019s compared to North America, which represents just over a quarter, at 27.95%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Europe comes third with just over one-fifth of global GDP (21.37%).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Together, these three blocs generate more than four-fifths (83.16%) of the world\u2019s total output.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BiggestEconomies-e1491574895908.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-169307\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BiggestEconomies-e1491574895908.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"515\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><b>The biggest economies in 2050 <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/issues\/economy\/the-world-in-2050.html\">new study by PricewaterhouseCooper<\/a> says that China will be in first place by 2050, because emerging economies will continue to grow faster than advanced ones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>India will rank second, the US will be third, and fourth place is expected to go to Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/10BiggestEconomies-e1491575012685.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-169309\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/10BiggestEconomies-e1491575012685.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The UK could be down to 10th place by 2050, while France could be out of the top 10 and Italy out of the top 20 as they are overtaken by faster-growing emerging economies such as Mexico, Turkey and Vietnam.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The report also says that the world economy could more than double in size by 2050, far outstripping population growth, due to technology-driven productivity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This article first appeared on the World Economic Forum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2017\/03\/worlds-biggest-economies-in-2017?utm_content=buffer6e09f&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/162907\/how-the-worlds-richest-people-make-their-money\/\" target=\"_blank\">How the world\u2019s richest people make their money<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The economy of the United States is the largest in the world.
