The ANC’s attempt to put up a show of unity in the party is a complete illusion, according to insiders speaking to the City Press<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Despite this week’s attempt by the ANC’s national working committee to walk back on the appearance of a divided top 6, the battles both for and against president Jacob Zuma are continuing behind the scenes, unabated.<\/p>\n

Party insiders speaking to the City Press said that secret meetings have been taking place across the country, as both Zuma’s opponents and supporters strategise to gain the upper hand.<\/p>\n

Zuma opponents reportedly want to get an emergency NEC meeting going, where the larger ANC leadership and continue the debate started in October 2016, of Zuma’s fitness to hold office.<\/p>\n

The Anti-Zuma camp is disappointed by deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, secretary general Gwede Mantashe and treasurer general Zweli Mkhize, however, and feels they are not up to the task of taking over as leaders.<\/p>\n

The president’s supporters, meanwhile, are countering with claims that they are seeking regime change, and that removing Zuma will only benefit opposition parties.<\/p>\n

Analysts and ratings agencies understand that Zuma’s supporters outnumber his opponents, as evidenced by the party’s inability to take action against him or hold him to account.<\/p>\n

An anonymous ANC MP told the City Press that no ANC MP will publicly vote against Zuma in the motion of no confidence being held on 18 April, but said that if the vote were secret, “Zuma would not be president on the 19th”.<\/p>\n

Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, a Zuma loyalist, refused to allow a secret ballot for the vote, saying the request had no basis in law.<\/p>\n

The UDM is taking the matter to court, and will use the claims of threats against members by the ANC as reason enough to warrant a secret vote.<\/p>\n
