{"id":17057,"date":"2012-07-05T16:11:43","date_gmt":"2012-07-05T14:11:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=17057"},"modified":"2012-07-05T16:12:57","modified_gmt":"2012-07-05T14:12:57","slug":"nedbank-takes-a-cheeky-jab-at-fnb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/17057\/nedbank-takes-a-cheeky-jab-at-fnb\/","title":{"rendered":"Nedbank takes a cheeky jab at FNB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an apparent swipe at FNB, Nedbank has released a video to popular video-sharing site, YouTube, showcasing their attempt at one-upmanship on FNB.<\/p>\n<p>When Wayne Willmore was looking to get himself an iPad, he turned to FNB based on the bank&#8217;s &#8220;Steve&#8221; campaign of adverts, which promises easy sign-up in 10 minutes online.<\/p>\n<p>Willmore was disappointed to find that FNB requested him to go into a branch to finalise his account &#8211; contrary to the bank&#8217;s advertised claims &#8211; and subsequently posted a letter to Nedbank on Facebook, praising Nedbank.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Please run an add and use me as one of your clients that you phone, and I&#8217;ll gladly tell the world that FNB stinks!!!!!!&#8221; [sic], the post read.<\/p>\n<p>The video in question is based on Willmore&#8217;s Facebook letter. It takes a clear jab at FNB,\u00a0emphasising key parts of Willmore&#8217;s post praising Nedbank for being &#8220;much better&#8221; than FNB, and even giving Willmore an iPad, which he said was the &#8220;drawcard&#8221; that led him to FNB.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17061\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Nedbank-boast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17061\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17061\" title=\"Nedbank boast\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Nedbank-boast.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Nedbank-boast.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Nedbank-boast-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nedbank&#8217;s selected emphasis<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Online quips<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>FNB did not respond directly to any claims made in the video, but seemed unfazed, simply stating its track record.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the twelve months from May 2011 to May 2012, FNB opened over 1.74 million new accounts [and] is currently distributing over 3,000 tablets and smartphones each week,&#8221; FNB said.<\/p>\n<p>Cheekily adding: &#8220;Naturally, we attract customers from other banks with this offer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The response to Nedbank&#8217;s video has been lacklustre, with the video hitting just over 540 views at the time of writing, and only a handful of commentors showing up in over a week, most of which don&#8217;t have anything positive to say.<\/p>\n<p>By time of publishing, Nedbank had not returned a request for comment regarding the bank&#8217;s intended purpose behind the video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8YmBS_Hjz18\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Banking popularity in SA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Numerous surveys and studies paint a picture of the current standing South Africa&#8217;s banks have with the population.<\/p>\n<p>By reputation, <a title=\"BusinessTech Article\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/11995\/best-and-worst-banks-in-sa-reputation-survey\/\">the RepTrak Pulse survey<\/a> lists FNB at the top* of the rankings, with Absa, Standard Bank and Nedbank following suit.<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"BusinessTech Article\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/13573\/most-popular-banks-in-sa-townships\/\">South African townships<\/a> , Standard Bank ranked as most popular amongst banking clients, with ABSA, Capitec and FNB tied for second, and Nedbank trailing behind.<\/p>\n<p>On the mobile and online fronts, the All Media and Products Survey (AMPS) showed that FNB is leading in both categories.<\/p>\n<p><em><small>* RepTrak Pulse survey ranks listed banks;
