While South Africa has\u00a0delayed the turnover to digital television for a number of years, neighbouring country, Namibia, has launched a digital offering of its own.<\/p>\n
MultiChoice Namibia has unveiled GOtv, a low-cost digital television product using the latest generation Digital Video Broadcast standard, DVB-T2, in Windhoek.<\/p>\n
For South Africa,\u00a0the new digital terrestrial television (DTT) signal is only scheduled to be switched on in Q3 2012, following years of delays.<\/p>\n
The DVB-T2 technology standard deployed by GOtv allows for up to 20 channels per frequency, this is different from DVB-T1 technology that only allows for 12 channels per frequency.<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0MultiChoice Namibia, GOtv offers “local channels made in Africa for Africa” along with international channels for a monthly fee of N$55 \u00a0per month for 15 channels.<\/p>\n
Kalumbi Shangula, chairman of the board of\u00a0MultiChoice Namibia said: “DVB-T2 technology is the most advanced digital terrestrial television technology worldwide. The launch of GOtv in Windhoek today, \u00a0puts Namibia at the forefront of deploying the latest digital terrestrial technology and is another exciting milestone in our digital roadmap.”<\/p>\n
The service launched with a special offer of N$499, which includes a decoder and three months subscription.<\/p>\n
MultiChoice Namibia says the service will expand in the following months to include other regions in the country.<\/p>\n
GOtv has already launched in a number of countries in Africa including Nigeria, Zambia, Uganda, and Kenya.<\/p>\n
