{"id":171383,"date":"2017-04-21T10:26:56","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T08:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=171383"},"modified":"2017-04-21T10:27:50","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T08:27:50","slug":"crime-syndicates-have-penetrated-sa-banks-attorney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/171383\/crime-syndicates-have-penetrated-sa-banks-attorney\/","title":{"rendered":"Syndicates have penetrated SA banks &#8211; attorney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Attorney Johan Victor says crime syndicates have infiltrated banks and mobile operators in South Africa, and are assisting in SIM-swap and online banking fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Victor is representing a group of people who have lost millions due to\u00a0Internet banking fraud.<\/p>\n<p>He said all the cases involved SIM-swap fraud and alleged phishing attacks. However, in none of the cases could it be found that the victims interacted with any phishing emails.<\/p>\n<p>The group is demanding detailed information from the banks about the fraud which occurred on their accounts.<\/p>\n<p>It is, however, not only the banks which are in the firing line.<\/p>\n<p>Victor said they plan to take legal action against the mobile operators which were involved in the associated SIM-swap fraud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey admitted, in writing to clients, that some of their staff members\u2019 login details were compromised and used to allow for SIM swaps,\u201d said Victor.<\/p>\n<p>However, the mobile operators deny liability, stating the connection with the SIM-swap fraud is \u201ctoo remote\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They argue that the perpetrators also had to have bank details and bank login information to access the accounts and transfer funds.<\/p>\n<p>The planned legal action against the banks and mobile operators is partly aimed at exposing details behind the online banking and SIM-swap fraud.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Crime syndicate<\/h3>\n<p>In October 2016,\u00a0news reports emerged that a crime syndicate had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/185162-massive-crime-syndicate-has-infiltrated-vodacom.html\"><strong>infiltrated Vodacom<\/strong><\/a> and was performing SIM-swap and Internet banking fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The report said a document showed that the crime syndicate recruited Vodacom call centre agents to help with illegal SIM swaps.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom confirmed it was investigating one if its agents regarding alleged SIM-swap fraud.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/185450-sim-swap-crime-syndicate-infiltrating-south-african-mobile-operators-investigated.html\"><strong>Cell C also confirmed<\/strong><\/a> it was aware of the investigation and\u00a0was working closely with the relevant authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCell C takes these matters very seriously and has many processes in place to detect and prevent fraudulent SIM swaps,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, MTN could not say whether a criminal syndicate had infiltrated the company or whether its subscribers were at risk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/170629\/major-sa-banks-taken-to-court-over-internet-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\">Major SA banks taken to court over Internet fraud<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Attorney Johan Victor says crime syndicates have infiltrated banks and mobile operators in South Africa, and are assisting in SIM-swap and online banking fraud.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":31,"featured_media":78690,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[961],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-171383","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-banking","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171383","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/31"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=171383"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171383\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":171389,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171383\/revisions\/171389"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/78690"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=171383"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=171383"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=171383"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
