{"id":173183,"date":"2017-05-03T12:31:38","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T10:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=173183"},"modified":"2017-05-03T12:46:27","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T10:46:27","slug":"opposition-parties-face-massive-dilemma-in-fight-against-zuma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/173183\/opposition-parties-face-massive-dilemma-in-fight-against-zuma\/","title":{"rendered":"Opposition parties face massive dilemma in fight against Zuma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s opposition parties face the ultimate catch-22 in\u00a0trying to get President Jacob Zuma to resign, as bringing down the unpopular president will mean they\u00a0lose their best chance to win the next election, according to\u00a0Daryl Glaser, political science professor at the University of Witwatersrand.<\/p>\n<p>Glaser, who was speaking in a report by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2017-05-02\/bid-to-topple-zuma-leaves-south-african-opposition-in-catch-22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloomberg\u00a0<\/a>, <\/strong>said that the\u00a0country&#8217;s opposition were almost certainly torn on the subject, noting that because of the presidents continuous scandals, the ruling African National Congress suffered its worst-ever electoral performance since the end of apartheid.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that these concerns have been echoed by the ANC itself, with several top ANC leaders having said the party risks losing power in 2019 elections if he\u2019s allowed to complete his second five-year term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of them may genuinely want Zuma to go and they may hope that his going spawns a kind of chaos and division in the ruling party that they could benefit from.
