Old Mutual has released its Long-term perspectives report for 2017, detailing which asset class – between local shares, international shares, bonds, gold, cash and property – has seen the greatest return of investment over the last 87 years.<\/p>\n

The primary aim of the report, which is now entering its fourth year, is to draw attention to the long-term behaviour of asset classes and, in so doing, provide perspective on the shorter-term volatility, said\u00a0Graham Tucker, Balanced Fund Portfolio Manager at Old Mutual’s MacroSolutions.<\/p>\n

It analyses these asset classes by using the\u00a0MacroSolutions Balanced Index \u2212 a diversified portfolio that is a proxy for an average balanced fund (the main savings solution in South Africa).<\/p>\n

The MacroSolutions Balanced Index dates back to 1929 according to the report, and provides a long-term total return series for an SA balanced fund. The Index has been fine-tuned over the years to reflect changes in the local investable universe.<\/p>\n
