The South African mint has struck its first legal-tender silver and platinum Krugerrands as part of the 50th anniversary of the flagship gold bullion coin.<\/p>\n

To date, more gold Krugerrands have been minted and circulated than all other gold bullion coins combined.<\/p>\n

The coin was first minted in 1967 as a vehicle for private ownership of gold and investment. By 1980, it accounted for 905 of the global gold coin market.<\/p>\n

The Gold Krugerrand’s popularity and investment value has made its new silver and platinum Krugerrand counterparts highly-anticipated and hoped for, according to global collectors.<\/p>\n

The new\u00a0coins were debuted earlier in 2017 with a test strike, and has now been made available for wider distribution, and can be ordered from the South African Mint<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The silver and platinum coins have the same simple and classic design of its gold counterpart, bearing the face of Paul Kruger and the Springbok, along with special 50th anniversary Mint mark.<\/p>\n

The silver coins can be ordered from the South African Mint, with a 1 ounce fine silver coin costing R600 – or R775 for the silver proof.<\/p>\n

The uncirculated silver coin is capped at 500,000 coins while a proof version will also be produced in the limited quantity of 15,000.<\/p>\n

That platinum Krugerrand has been issued with a maximum mintage of only 1,967 coins, which makes them collectors’ items.<\/p>\n

“This is the first and only time a Krugerrand is issued in silver (and platinum),” the SA Mint said.<\/p>\n

Due to legislation and because it is non-gold, the 1 oz fine-silver Proof Krugerrand features a denomination of R1, while the platinum Proof Krugerrand features a denomination of R10.<\/p>\n

A 1 ounce gold Krugerrand (22ct gold) costs R31,600 for the 2017, 50th Anniversary editions, while the new platinum Krugerrand is available for R28,500 for the proof coin.<\/p>\n
