{"id":175539,"date":"2017-05-21T15:00:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-21T13:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=175539"},"modified":"2017-05-19T17:06:57","modified_gmt":"2017-05-19T15:06:57","slug":"how-to-write-a-cv-that-gets-past-a-companys-automated-filtering-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/175539\/how-to-write-a-cv-that-gets-past-a-companys-automated-filtering-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"How to write a CV that gets past a company&#8217;s automated filtering systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the name of making things easier for companies by \u201cpre-filtering out\u201d unqualified candidates, the peddlers of ATS (<span class=\"s1\">Applicant Tracking Systems)<\/span>\u00a0software have dehumanized the hiring process and sent a terrible message to job seekers &#8211; conform to the requirements of our machines, or risk being ignored, says career expert\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Anish Majumdar, speaking to Glassdoor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a result\u00a0applicants have begun<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0to use job postings to identify keywords that they belive will help their CVs be more successful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;This is wildly ineffective, because most job postings are a mix of \u201cmust have\u201d skills, \u201cgood to have\u201d skills, and \u201cpie in the sky\u201d skills that someone decided to stick in at the last minute, said Majumdar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Try to play to all of these areas and your resume will end up looking like Frankenstein\u2019s monster.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Instead,\u00a0Majumdar broke down how to get past these automated systems, and still have your CV be eye-catching\u00a0when a hiring manager is reviewing it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Using LinkedIn\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/LinkedIn-wall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21447 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/LinkedIn-wall.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/LinkedIn-wall.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/LinkedIn-wall-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Majumadar recommends creating a shortlist of 10-15 direct competitors through LinkedIn, before starting on your CV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;For example, let\u2019s say I\u2019m going after a Chief Medical Officer position. By using LinkedIn\u2019s search function to pull up fellow CMOs, I can quickly gather together the URLs of highly qualified people who currently have this job.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Now, I\u2019m going to scroll down to the \u201cFeatured Skills &amp; Endorsements\u201d section of their profiles. These are keywords, and the best part is that they\u2019ve been pre-optimized by going through the LinkedIn system. You don\u2019t need to wordsmith any of these keywords.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At this point you should write down any and all keywords that you might remotely possess., said\u00a0Majumadar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now that you have this general list, do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Circle the 5-7 keywords you are strongest\u00a0in.<\/b> This is your wheelhouse, the engine behind why you\u2019ll succeed at this job. These will be highlighted prominently within the resume and expanded upon within your work experience section.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Circle the keywords you have some working experience with.<\/b> These are electives, which you have the option of briefly highlighting within the resume.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Cross out those keywords which you have zero experience with.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>How to add weight\u00a0to your keywords<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/CV-lies.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-66044 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/CV-lies.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/CV-lies.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/CV-lies-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Early types of ATS software used what\u2019s known as semantic search technology, says Majumadar, a fancy of saying they counted up the keywords they\u2019d been programmed to look for, and those resumes with more of them were passed along.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a result, all types of bad behavior proliferated on resumes, including \u201cstuffing\u201d the document with dozens upon dozens of repetitive keywords. These days however, it\u2019s all about contextualization, analyzing the document to see how these skills are expanded upon within the document, and weighing that instead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Majumadar broke down how to add additional weight to your chosen keywords:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">1. Create a large, boldfaced title at the start of your resume (after your name and contact information) that either lists the position you\u2019re going after or offers a powerful branding statement.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Title Example:<\/b><i> Chief Medical Officer (CMO)<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Branding Statement Example:<\/b><i> \u201cClinical\/Medical Affairs Executive with a focus on improved patient outcomes and growth in Managed Care environments.\u201d<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">2. Ditch the \u201cObjective\u201d section at the start of the resume in favor of a couple of powerful bullet points that highlight your strongest keywords.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Here\u2019s an example highlighting clinical trial design:\u00a0<\/b><i>\u201cExpert in working with Medical Directors and Contract Research Organizations (CROs) on developing robust clinical trials and managing areas such as site selection.\u201d<\/i><b> <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">3. Create a standalone keywords section where you simply group together the major keywords you wish to highlight.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">List the strongest ones FIRST, followed by the second-tier keywords. Remember: be sure you can credibly defend any keywords listed during an interview.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">4. Don\u2019t be afraid to go longer to tell the story.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">F<\/span><span class=\"s1\">orget about adhering to a 1-page limit- fleshing out keywords is well worth the extra space. Provide examples of project successes, or even small wins at work, where you applied a keyword skill to really stand out.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">5. Write out all acronyms, and provide the abbreviation.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Ex. Worked with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) to rapidly establish a presence within Albuquerque, New Mexico territory.<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">6. Keep fancy graphics and elements to a minimum.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I recently worked with a client who had some excellent content in a 3D text box within the resume. Problem was, the ATS software perceived this as an image, not text, and none of the information passed through! Keep the layout simple, use visual elements sparingly, and remember: <b>content is king.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">7. Don\u2019t place your entire career strategy in the hands of ATS software.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Connect with others. Demonstrate your value and passion. Ask for help.
