{"id":176059,"date":"2017-05-21T07:46:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-21T05:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=176059"},"modified":"2017-05-21T07:46:46","modified_gmt":"2017-05-21T05:46:46","slug":"zumas-friend-scored-big-in-r1-billion-water-contract-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/176059\/zumas-friend-scored-big-in-r1-billion-water-contract-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Zuma&#8217;s friend scored big in R1 billion water contract: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A friend of president Jacob Zuma &#8211; who once offered to pay the president&#8217;s Nkandla bill and establish the Friends of Jacob Zuma Trust to raise funds for his fraud and corruption trial &#8211; received an R81 million advance on a R1 billion water contract,<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24.com\/SouthAfrica\/News\/watergate-zuma-buddy-scored-massive-20170520\"> the City Press reports<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Former mayor of Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal and construction magnate, Philani Mavundla, received the R81 million payment before his company had even broken ground on the project \u00a0&#8211; which is against the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>The project in question was\u00a0for an acid mine drainage plant in Springs, east of Johannesburg, which was\u00a0one R1 billion project of several, totalling a combined R12 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The contract was awarded to Mavundla by the Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), which falls under the department of water and sanitation.
