{"id":176669,"date":"2017-05-26T07:27:11","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T05:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=176669"},"modified":"2017-05-26T07:30:09","modified_gmt":"2017-05-26T05:30:09","slug":"5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-67","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/176669\/5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-67\/","title":{"rendered":"5 important things happening in South Africa today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/pari.org.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Betrayal-of-the-Promise-25052017.pdf\">63 page report<\/a><\/strong> compiled by nine academics and researchers affiliated to the universities of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand has been released, investigating state capture in South Africa, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/projects.huffingtonpost.co.za\/articles\/the-shadow-state-landmark-investigation-says-guptas-must-be-inv\/?utm_hp_ref=za-homepage\">claiming that the country has been stolen by a network of individuals &#8211; with president Jacob Zuma and the Gupta family at the center. <\/a><\/strong>The academics describe state capture in South Africa as a &#8216;silent coup&#8217; and says there is overwhelming evidence to this effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/companies\/energy\/2017-05-26-now-zuma-sets-up-probe-into-molefe-debacle\/\">President Jacob Zuma has now also joined the chorus of people investigating the reappointment of Brian Molefe as Eskom CEO<\/a><\/strong>. Zuma announced the establishment of an interministerial committee to &#8216;investigate the facts&#8217; of the Molefe matter, to help guide cabinet in the eventuality that something similar happens in the future. This is now on top of the forensic investigation launched by public enterprises minister Lynne Brown,<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/thetimes\/2017\/05\/26\/I-didnt-lie-about-Molefe-minister-insists\"> who maintains she did not lie to Parliament.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/thetimes\/2017\/05\/26\/Support-Zuma-or-shut-up\">Zuma&#8217;s supporters are gearing up to fight back against any attempt to raise the president&#8217;s fitness to hold office at the ANC&#8217;s NEC meeting this weekend.<\/a><\/strong> It is speculated that the issue will be raised &#8211; but according to Zuma&#8217;s supporters, this has been discussed before and put to rest, and they will band together to quash any attempt to bring it up yet again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Analysts have pointed to the recent by-elections in Nquthu, KZN, as a tipping point for the ANC, who must face a new political reality.<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/thetimes\/2017\/05\/26\/ANC-must-face-new-reality-after-poll-results\"> The ANC threw everything it had at the contested municipality, including sending over the party&#8217;s top 6 to campaign &#8211; but in the end, it suffered a humiliating defeat to the IFP<\/a><\/strong>.
