{"id":178247,"date":"2017-06-09T09:38:41","date_gmt":"2017-06-09T07:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=178247"},"modified":"2017-06-09T10:55:53","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T08:55:53","slug":"vodacom-walks-away-from-springbok-sponsorship-as-mtn-steps-in-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/178247\/vodacom-walks-away-from-springbok-sponsorship-as-mtn-steps-in-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Vodacom walks away from Springbok sponsorship as MTN steps in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Update:<\/strong> SA Rugby has confirmed MTN&#8217;s sponsorship.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The South African Rugby Union (SARU) says that Vodacom is to step away from its sponsorship rights of the Springbok team to allow SA Rugby to negotiate with other telecommunications companies.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom has sponsored the Springboks since 1994 and held the exclusive rights in the telecommunication sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Springboks confirmed that MTN will be the new sponsor, with reports saying the mobile operator will sign a four-year sponsorship deal, worth between R40-million and\u00a0R50-million a year, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarugbymag.co.za\/blog\/details\/mtn-to-sponsor-springboks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SA Rugby Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>MTN will become the official team sponsor, with the MTN\u00a0logo appearing on the front of the jersey.<\/p>\n<p>MTN&#8217;s sponsorship comes at a time when <span class=\"st\">Africa&#8217;s largest mobile operator by subscribers, recently reported its first ever full-year loss.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/MTN-Boks.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-new-size wp-image-178271\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/MTN-Boks-640x546.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/MTN-Boks-640x546.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/MTN-Boks-300x256.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/MTN-Boks-768x655.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/MTN-Boks-1024x873.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/MTN-Boks.png 1072w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Blue Label Telecoms partnered with SA Rugby for the sponsorship of the Boks in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVodacom would have been within their legal rights to insist on exclusivity,\u201d said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of the SA Rugby Executive Council, I would like to express our gratitude to Vodacom, who have demonstrated what a tremendous partner they have been over the years by hearing our case and putting the needs of the national team first.
