{"id":178793,"date":"2017-06-13T08:37:21","date_gmt":"2017-06-13T06:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=178793"},"modified":"2017-06-13T15:45:44","modified_gmt":"2017-06-13T13:45:44","slug":"arts-minister-to-lobby-the-anc-to-change-south-africas-name-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/178793\/arts-minister-to-lobby-the-anc-to-change-south-africas-name-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Arts minister to lobby the ANC to change South Africa&#8217;s name: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has vowed to lobby the ANC&#8217;s National Executive Committee in an open discussion on finding an appropriate name for South Africa, according to a report in the 13 June edition of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/mercury\/news\/mthethwa-on-drive-to-rename-sa-9763599\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mercury<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">Mthethwa who was speaking to\u00a0party supporters during a cadre\u2019s forum on Sunday, pointed out that South Africa is not the name of the country, but is just \u201ca geographical description of where we are\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">He noted that the\u00a0ANC had never given itself time to think about the name of the country, and that as his department had power to change the naming of\u00a0public areas, there was now an opportunity to rename the country to one that was more reflective of the country&#8217;s past and its people.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">While\u00a0government had made strides in changing the colonial names of places, there was more to be done in identifying improper names, such as Durban and Empangeni, said Mthethwa.<\/p>\n<p data-bind=\"text: $data\">\u201cTo tell the truth, the country does not have a name.
