{"id":180589,"date":"2017-06-24T19:00:19","date_gmt":"2017-06-24T17:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=180589"},"modified":"2017-06-23T16:18:48","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T14:18:48","slug":"why-south-africa-doesnt-have-its-own-unicorn-startup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/180589\/why-south-africa-doesnt-have-its-own-unicorn-startup\/","title":{"rendered":"Why South Africa doesn&#8217;t have its own &#8220;unicorn&#8221; startup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Elevation-holdings in conjunction with\u00a0the Gordon Institute for Business Science have released a new <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.wixstatic.com\/ugd\/6baf89_adf5c23de3224cf18b172edc990ea965.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report <\/a>on the state of tech and innovation startups in South Africa, how these companies can catapult themselves forward, and why one is yet to reach the coveted status of a $1 billion &#8220;unicorn&#8221; evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe total value of all the tech and innovation startups in Joburg and Cape Town together, is about $1.5 billion: a similar size to Melbourne\u2019s, smaller than Lagos\u2019, and half the size of Sao Paolo\u2019s,\u201d according to Elevation&#8217;s Jason Levin, author of the report.<\/p>\n<p>While there has been progress in the field,\u00a0there is a question as to why South Africa feels like a middle-order contender rather than a podium occupant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is especially true when considering South Africa has not produced a unicorn (a startup valued at $1 billion+) while Nigeria and Poland have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We almost did in Mark Shuttleworth&#8217;s Thawte (its 1999 price tag of $575 million equates to about $850 million in modern money), and Nigeria has one in Africa Internet Group&#8217;s e-commerce marketplace, Jumia, which was reportedly worth $1.1 billion by mid-2016.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mimecast, founded by South Africans Peter Bauer and Neil Murray, is a unicorn with a current market cap of $1.2 billion \u2013 but was created in 2003, a year after the pair left the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Moving forward\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Tech-start-up.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-66436 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Tech-start-up.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Tech-start-up.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Tech-start-up-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In researching the report, Levin spoke\u00a0to over 3o major players in the South African startup ecosystem in the space of a 6 month period.<\/p>\n<p>While he received plenty of positive feedback regarding startups, he also found that the country\u00a0was unlikely to produce anything north of a $1 billion valuation anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In fact, while we are making progress, we\u2019re aren\u2019t creating (and retaining) many new businesses valued at a quarter of that,&#8221; he noted.<\/p>\n<p>One of the <strong>largest issues behind these failings is the current skills deficit<\/strong> the startup sector is facing.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to BusinessTech, Levin said it was something that was mentioned both<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>anecdotally by founders, but\u00a0also\u00a0by reports like GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) and GEDI (Global Entrepreneurship &amp; Development Institute) as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our formal education system and entrepreneurial training is weak compared to\u00a0other countries, even\u00a0other emerging markets. We\u00a0have very strong\u00a0pockets at\u00a0some of the tertiary institutions though.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When looking at the\u00a0steps needed to encourage start up and work towards a unicorn evaluation growth, Levin indicated South Africa should look at the global\u00a0recipes set out by groups such as GEM, GEDI and Startup Genome.<\/p>\n<p>These firstly call firstly for &#8220;Activation&#8221; (entrepreneurial spirit, education, ease of doing business etc.), Globalisation (funding and global connectedness), &#8220;Expansion&#8221; (filling gaps and removal of barriers) and &#8220;Integration&#8221; (Global, historical and cultural integration).<\/p>\n<p>According to Levin, in South Africa, we need to work specifically on<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Education,<\/li>\n<li>Technology adoption,<\/li>\n<li>Access to early stage capital, and<\/li>\n<li>Global ambition and knowledge sharing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s why the\u00a0report says let&#8217;s look for &#8216;leapfrogs&#8217; in parallel to try and advance part\u00a0of the\u00a0ecosystem more\u00a0quickly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Leapfrogging<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Frog-e1480689400450.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-145559\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Frog-640x415.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If we want to accelerate the SA startup ecosystem, and fast, we need to box clever, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One route would be right now, without delay, to seek out 10 to 20 probable &#8216;rockstar&#8217; stories: LifeQ, Giraffe, Snapplify, WiGroup, Jumo, Yoco, ID Work, Zoona and other appropriate \u2018oonas,\u2019 and put real guns behind them. This may galvanize the entire system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Or create sufficient buzz that we begin, as a country, to hear and believe our own press, punch above our weight, and most importantly, work to create more of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we want a generation of dynamic startup entrepreneurs, the system needs to captivate the Millennials coming up; they need role models; success stories and an easier ride than the system has provided to date. Only if we can harness their enthusiasm and ideas can we revolutionise rather than just evolve things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Government&#8217;s role<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Government-security-spy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-80741 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Government-security-spy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Government-security-spy.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Government-security-spy-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Levin&#8217;s report focused primarily on role players in the industry there is also an undeniable fact that government has a role in whether South African start-ups will be successful &#8211; especially how they tackle the issue economically and politically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Government investment is meant to be more philanthropic and\u00a0developmental\u00a0in nature, but\u00a0should\u00a0still look for a positive real return: at the moment that\u00a0capital is laborious to access, and\u00a0poorly\u00a0post-investment\u00a0managed,&#8221; said Levin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is quite a bit of international investment around in the impact investing\/social entrepreneurship space, and South Africa could do a\u00a0very\u00a0good job of attracting that. But for general foreign capital inflows, we just need\u00a0great\u00a0businesses and a conducive\u00a0business climate (and policy) &#8211;\u00a0we&#8217;re not there with those\u00a0things (yet).&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>So when will we have our unicorn?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Millionaire-jet.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-54951 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Millionaire-jet.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Millionaire-jet.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Millionaire-jet-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Within the next 5 years,&#8221; says Levin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But in many ways, it&#8217;s the wrong question. We should be aiming to have ten $100 million &#8216;rockstar&#8217; businesses, or even a hundred $10 million &#8216;gazelles&#8217; instead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;South Africa is a very complex environment. It will take a long time to fix or advance things\u00a0using the &#8216;formula&#8217;.
