{"id":180627,"date":"2017-06-21T14:35:34","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T12:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=180627"},"modified":"2017-06-21T14:35:34","modified_gmt":"2017-06-21T12:35:34","slug":"these-are-the-6-stocks-helping-hold-up-the-jse-right-now-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/180627\/these-are-the-6-stocks-helping-hold-up-the-jse-right-now-report\/","title":{"rendered":"These are the 6 stocks helping hold up the JSE right now: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Foreign investors are pulling out of the South African market at an alarming rate, but instead of sending the JSE into a decline, the index has maintained its strength primarily due to just two stocks, according to a new analysis by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-06-20\/naspers-gains-made-in-hong-kong-shield-jse-from-foreign-exodus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The JSE&#8217;s\u00a0 benchmark is up 0.6% this year, well short of the 16% advance in the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, after foreigners dumped a net R77 billion rand of local shares.<\/p>\n<p>However these numbers could have been much worse if not for media conglomerate <strong>Naspers Ltd<\/strong> and luxury retailer <strong>Richemont<\/strong>,\u00a0noted the report.<\/p>\n<p>The share prices of the two JSE heavyweights that have contributed most of the year\u2019s returns, but are not actually determined on the JSE but rather Hong Kong and Zurich, said\u00a0Shaun le Roux, a money manager at PSG Asset Management speaking to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>Naspers which currently constitutes 17% of the 166-member index has gained 28% in 2017, primarily because Tencent, of which it owns a third, surged to almost 50% in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison Richemont, the second-largest index member at 8.5%, has climbed 18%. With its focus on global luxury brands like Baume &amp; Mercier and Montblanc, Richemont is less at risk from the South African economy, noted Le Roux.<\/p>\n<p>However Richemont and Naspers are not the only big players on the JSE.<\/p>\n<p>Six companies (<strong>Naspers<\/strong>, <strong>Richemont<\/strong>, <strong>BHP Billiton<\/strong>, <strong>Anglo American<\/strong>, <strong>British American Tobacco<\/strong> and the <strong>MTN Group<\/strong>) account for just over 42% of the All-share composition, with the remaining 160 members making up the rest.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison to strong contenders Naspers and Richemont, BHP Billiton is currently trading up over the past year (1.36%), alongside Anglo American\u00a0(9.5%), while British American Tobacco is currently under-performing at (0.02%)<\/p>\n<p>The MTN Group has proven to be the big outlier of the six, posting a -25.18% result over the last year and a more concerning -51.25% \u00a0drop over the last 3 years.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/JSE.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-180637 size-new-size\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/JSE-640x329.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/JSE-640x329.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/JSE-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/JSE-768x395.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/JSE.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Investing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to\u00a0Le Roux foreign sentiment towards South African equities remains poor and shareholder registers indicate widespread selling by foreign investors of most JSE-listed stocks over the past few months.<\/p>\n<p>However he also noted that this could point to a good investment opportunity for local traders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The outflows present an opportunity for domestic investors as valuations drop.
