{"id":18138,"date":"2012-07-20T00:45:39","date_gmt":"2012-07-19T22:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=18138"},"modified":"2012-07-20T00:51:13","modified_gmt":"2012-07-19T22:51:13","slug":"broadband-penetration-and-gdp-where-sa-ranks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/18138\/broadband-penetration-and-gdp-where-sa-ranks\/","title":{"rendered":"Broadband penetration and GDP: where SA ranks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The OECD recently released its latest broadband statistics, revealing that South Africa ranks lower than all OECD countries when looking at broadband penetration and GDP.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa currently has 827,091 fixed broadband subscribers (ADSL subscribers), translating into a fixed-broadband penetration rate of 1.7% (subscribers per 100 inhabitants). South Africa\u2019s broadband penetration rate is significantly lower than the OECD average of 25.6 subscribers per 100 inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>According to the OECD, Switzerland tops the OECD fixed broadband ranking for the first time with 39.9 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, followed closely by the Netherlands (39.1) and Denmark (37.9).<\/p>\n<p>The following graph shows the broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants based on technology. 2011<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Broadband penetration and GDP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The OECD also released its latest broadband penetration and GDP figures, showing that there is a correlation (simple correlation = 0.65) between the GDP of a country and the number of broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa, with a 1.7% fixed broadband penetration rate and a GDP per capita (USD, PPP) of 11,000, shows a very low broadband subscription rate for its GDP.<\/p>\n<p>The following graph shows the broadband penetration and GDP for OECD nations.<\/p>\n<div
