{"id":182211,"date":"2017-06-28T09:05:15","date_gmt":"2017-06-28T07:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=182211"},"modified":"2017-06-28T09:05:15","modified_gmt":"2017-06-28T07:05:15","slug":"banks-should-start-investing-in-bitcoin-and-other-fintech-imf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/182211\/banks-should-start-investing-in-bitcoin-and-other-fintech-imf\/","title":{"rendered":"Banks should start investing in Bitcoin and other fintech: IMF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has published a discussion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/Staff-Discussion-Notes\/Issues\/2017\/06\/16\/Fintech-and-Financial-Services-Initial-Considerations-44985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">document <\/a>indicating that\u00a0banks around the world should begin to seriously consider investing in cryptocurrencies and other fintech opportunities, as a means of adapting to new consumer and technological demands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From artificial intelligence to cryptography, rapid advances in digital technology are transforming the financial services landscape, creating opportunities and challenges for consumers, service providers, and regulators alike,&#8221; the group said.<\/p>\n<p>Given the IMF\u2019s mandate to promote the stability of the international monetary system, the paper focuses primarily on the rapidly changing nature of cross-border payments using these new currencies.<\/p>\n<p>However, it also\u00a0highlighted a number of other benefits, including\u00a0new business opportunities for consumers and regulators as well as improved cross-border trade and reduced barriers of entry.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, it highlighted ongoing concerns with the stability and integrity of new fintech (including cyber-attacks, money-laundering and terrorism financing), but noted that this could and should be\u00a0effectively managed without stifling innovation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall, the financial services sector is poised for change. But it is hard to judge whether this will be more evolutionary or revolutionary.
