{"id":183045,"date":"2017-07-03T07:35:35","date_gmt":"2017-07-03T05:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=183045"},"modified":"2017-07-03T07:35:35","modified_gmt":"2017-07-03T05:35:35","slug":"postbank-awaiting-full-banking-licence-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/183045\/postbank-awaiting-full-banking-licence-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Postbank awaiting full banking licence: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Postbank has submitted its\u00a0final application for a full banking licence to the Reserve Bank, bringing it another step closer to becoming a fully-fledged bank, according to a report by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/companies\/2017-07-03-postbank-awaits-reserve-bank-nod-for-full-banking-licence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessDay<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The section 16 licence will allow\u00a0Postbank, which currently allows only for deposits, to begin lending money.<\/p>\n<p>Post Office CEO Mark Barnes had previously indicated that this will allow the new bank to target lending to the informal economy, such as spaza shops and homeowners without title deeds.<\/p>\n<p>In May,\u00a0Telecommunications minister Siyabonga Cwele indicated that the South Africa Post Office\u2019s transition into a development bank will be\u00a0government\u2019s first big step in radically transforming the financial sector and challenging the current \u2018big four\u2019 banking institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not going to be a normal bank like the big four.
