{"id":183895,"date":"2017-07-06T07:20:04","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T05:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=183895"},"modified":"2017-07-06T07:20:04","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T05:20:04","slug":"anc-looking-to-extend-the-qualifying-age-for-child-grants-from-18-to-21-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/183895\/anc-looking-to-extend-the-qualifying-age-for-child-grants-from-18-to-21-report\/","title":{"rendered":"ANC looking to extend the qualifying age for child grants from 18 to 21: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ANC has indicated that it will be extending the age limit for child social grant recipients from 18 to 21, according to a report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/national\/2017-07-05-anc-wants-child-social-grants-extended-to-recipients-up-to-age-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessDay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendation, which was raised on the last day of the party&#8217;s\u00a0national policy conference in Nasrec, will again tabled at the party\u2019s December national conference where it is expected to be adopted as party policy.<\/p>\n<p>Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said the limit extension would only apply to those children who remained in school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did not consider the financial consequences of increasing grants \u2026 We will sit down and work out whether it is affordable or not\u201a&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>Social grants in South Africa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to a June 2017 report by the IRR, there are currently more people receiving social grants in South Africa than there are people with jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2016, there were 15,545,000 people with jobs in South Africa while 17,094,331 people were receiving social grants,\u201d said IRR analyst, Gerbrandt van Heerden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe numbers are a recipe for social and political chaos. With South Africa formally in recession, the government will find it difficult to afford the cost of its social grants programme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the economy stagnates, and tax revenue slows, demand for more grants will increase. The government will then have to cut other areas of expenditure to meet popular demands for more and higher grants.
