{"id":184349,"date":"2017-07-10T08:16:28","date_gmt":"2017-07-10T06:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=184349"},"modified":"2017-07-10T08:16:28","modified_gmt":"2017-07-10T06:16:28","slug":"uber-drivers-should-get-permits-or-get-off-the-road-transport-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/184349\/uber-drivers-should-get-permits-or-get-off-the-road-transport-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Uber drivers should get permits or get off the road: transport minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Transport minister Joe Maswanganyi says that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2017\/07\/10\/maswanganyi-wants-uber-drivers-to-apply-for-public-transport-licenses-1\">he wants Uber drivers to apply for public transport licences<\/a><\/strong> and comply with legislation, or be removed from SA roads.<\/p>\n<p>The minister&#8217;s comments come as tensions between metered taxi drivers and uber drivers flare up, with the former accusing the latter of stealing potential work, while getting a free ride themselves from government.<\/p>\n<p>In late June, metered taxi drivers marched in protest against the &#8216;favouritism&#8217; shown to Uber drivers in the country. While the group&#8217;s strike action was denied, a memorandum of grievances was still delivered to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Metered taxi drivers need to attain a public transport permit to operate &#8211; however this same requirement is not needed to be an Uber driver.
