Futurists of the time expected great things in the 21st century, from mining on the moon, to modular mega-space stations and space hotels being a popular destination for those looking to get away from it all.<\/p>\n<p>While <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/infographics\/infographic.view.php?id=11272\">moon mining<\/a><\/strong> is still on the cards the costs involved with anything to do with space still makes it incredibly difficult for people to actually get out there.<\/p>\n<p>Until there is perhaps a significant shift in technology, enough to counter the cost and logistics of space travel, we&#8217;re very much still in the &#8216;observer&#8217; and &#8216;remote explorer&#8217; phase of space travel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we say now:<\/strong> <em>Space tourism is definitely on its way to becoming a thing, but no one expects humanity to make the jump to space living the way they thought we would in the early 1980s. We were to be living in a world where our robot friends would attend to our every need.<\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s world, we certainly have some basic forms of robotic servants (like the Roomba), but we are more integrated into the &#8220;internet of things&#8221; &#8211; connected devices that manage some tasks around the house &#8211; than we are dependant on a singular robotic servant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we say now:<\/strong> <em>We are making strides in robot technology, and contemporary futurists predict we will have robotic helpers and even companions as early as 2030. Some predict the advent of drone delivery to herald the sci-fi favourite &#8216;flying car&#8217; era around 2050. Underpinning this &#8216;next revolution&#8217; will be friction-less technology, and vehicles with no moving parts.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>While some of these ideas are outlandish, the Future Catalog never gives any exact timelines, referring to only &#8220;in the future&#8221;, or &#8220;in the 21st century&#8221;.
