Number verification app, Truecaller, has released a special report detailing the top 20 countries most affected by spam calls since the start of 2017.<\/p>\n

The data was aggregated anonymously from incoming calls that have either been marked as spam by users, or automatically flagged by Truecaller during the period of 1 January 2017 to 31 May 2017.<\/p>\n

This accounts for\u00a0over 5.5 billion spam calls, the report noted.<\/p>\n

The data was further broken down according to the types of spam calls users\u00a0are receiving based on the\u00a0top 100 spammers in each region\u00a0for the month of May.<\/p>\n

According to the report, South Africa was 5th highest worldwide, with an average of 15 spam calls a month<\/strong>. This places it behind only Chile (17.4), Brazil (20.7), the USA (20.7) and India (22.6).<\/p>\n

Unlike most countries, which lean heavily towards one specific category of spam calls, Truecaller noted that\u00a0South Africa seems to have more of an even spread when it comes to who is spamming.<\/p>\n

Telemarketing (39%) is highest, followed by financial (24%) and insurance (13%) calls.<\/p>\n

Truecaller also noted that, unlike Kenya and Nigeria, South Africa only has 1% of its calls marked as scam.<\/p>\n
