{"id":189011,"date":"2017-07-30T21:07:52","date_gmt":"2017-07-30T19:07:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=189011"},"modified":"2017-07-30T21:07:52","modified_gmt":"2017-07-30T19:07:52","slug":"mtn-under-fresh-scrutiny-in-nigeria-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/189011\/mtn-under-fresh-scrutiny-in-nigeria-report\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN under fresh scrutiny in Nigeria &#8211; report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate in Nigeria has reportedly withdrawn a document that largely absolves mobile operator MTN of accusations of illegally repatriating $14 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The report, presented to the Senate late last week, was critical of the regulatory shortcomings of the Nigeria&#8217;s central bank, and was sent back for additional scrutiny, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-mtn-group-nigeria-idUSKBN1AD1RQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters reported<\/a>, citing two people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria&#8217;s parliament had decided to investigate whether MTN unlawfully repatriated $13.92 billion between 2006 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is alleged that MTN did not obtain certificates declaring it had invested foreign currency in Nigeria within a 24-hour deadline stipulated in a 1995 law, and so the repatriation of returns on those investments was illegal,&#8221; Reuters said.<\/p>\n<p>Under investigation were allegations against MTN and financial institutions including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and commercial banks such as Nigeria&#8217;s Stanbic IBTC Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The report was critical of CBN&#8217;s monitoring of foreign exchange transfers, calling its oversight of banks &#8220;inadequate&#8221;.
