{"id":189576,"date":"2017-08-02T08:12:26","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T06:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=189576"},"modified":"2017-08-02T08:12:26","modified_gmt":"2017-08-02T06:12:26","slug":"over-200000-south-africans-could-lose-their-medical-aids-due-to-nhi-regulations-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/189576\/over-200000-south-africans-could-lose-their-medical-aids-due-to-nhi-regulations-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 200,000 South Africans could lose their medical aids due to NHI regulations: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"testArtCol_a\" class=\"art-layout-a-2x\">\n<p>Insurance and health experts have slammed a new plan by the\u00a0Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) to scrap smaller medical aids.<\/p>\n<p>This after the\u00a0CMS announced it would\u00a0consolidate or dissolve small medical schemes with the aim of bringing the industry in line with the incoming National Health Insurance (NHI) regulations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the new regulations, medical schemes with fewer than 6,000 principal members will no longer be allowed to operate within the country.<\/p>\n<p>These changes are likely to affect more than\u00a0228,000 people which belong to these smaller schemes, according to a report by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/national\/2017-08-02-experts-decry-plan-to-consolidate-small-medical-schemes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessDay<\/a><\/strong>. Notably, the majority of this number are South African employees who enjoy benefits as part of their employer group, as well as a number of subsidised costs.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to BusinessDay, CMS acting registrar Sipho Kabane confirmed that the changes were made to bring medical aids in line with the NHI white paper.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that consolidation was necessary because fragmented risk pools were expensive and limited the scope for cross-subsidisation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It isn\u2019t just about noncompliance [with the act]. This is just the beginning.
