{"id":191568,"date":"2017-08-10T16:27:15","date_gmt":"2017-08-10T14:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=191568"},"modified":"2017-08-10T16:27:15","modified_gmt":"2017-08-10T14:27:15","slug":"how-much-money-south-africans-spend-on-data-every-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/191568\/how-much-money-south-africans-spend-on-data-every-month\/","title":{"rendered":"How much money South Africans spend on data every month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Web browser Opera and digital reading non-profit, Worldreader, have released a new report detailing how much the average South African spends on data each month and what the most popular data bundles are.<\/p>\n<p>The study is based on the results of over 50,000 male and female respondents between the ages of\u00a014 to 44 across South Africa,\u00a0Nigeria, and Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Data must fall&#8221; has been a highly debated topic in the country over the last few months, with the issue coming to a head in the past weeks with new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/190984\/major-new-data-voice-and-sms-laws-that-you-need-to-know-about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulations<\/a> <\/strong>being instituted as well as an\u00a0investigation by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/220880-disappearing-airtime-is-real-we-have-the-proof.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyBroadband<\/a> <\/strong>about MTN&#8217;s &#8220;disappearing data&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However various groups have also warned about government&#8217;s interference in the telecommunications sector, with fears that excessive governmental control could lead to the industry producing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/191150\/government-will-turn-vodacom-and-mtn-into-the-next-saa-or-eskom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another<\/a> <\/strong>Eskom or South African Airways.<\/p>\n<p>The report found that women in South Africa typically spend more on mobile data than men each month.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Opera-x.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-191626\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Opera-x.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Opera-x.jpg 1194w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Opera-x-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Opera-x-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Opera-x-1024x575.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Data bundles between 100MB &#8211; 1GB are the most popular for both men and women, with popularity steadily declining on the highest data packages.<\/p>\n<p>However more South Africans opt to buy data bundles over 10GB than those who buy 5GB &#8211;
