{"id":191826,"date":"2017-08-17T08:43:23","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T06:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=191826"},"modified":"2017-08-17T08:54:24","modified_gmt":"2017-08-17T06:54:24","slug":"the-bank-south-africans-would-most-like-to-switch-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/191826\/the-bank-south-africans-would-most-like-to-switch-to\/","title":{"rendered":"The bank South Africans would most like to switch to"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A BusinessTech poll shows that 44% of South Africans would switch to Capitec if they were to change from their current bank account.<\/p>\n<p>The poll was conducted over a two week period from 31 July to 11 August, and drew over 10,000 responses from BusinessTech readers, who represent male and female business and technology professionals in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Capitec was by far the most popular choice for readers when asked &#8220;if you were to switch banks, which one which SA bank would you switch to?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The second most popular choice was FNB, with 23% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Other SA banks &#8211; Standard Bank, Nedbank and Absa &#8211; could not muster higher than 6% of the vote, with Absa tracking the lowest with only 4%.<\/p>\n<p>About 17% of respondents said that they would never switch from their current bank at all.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Poll-August-2017.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-191850\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Poll-August-2017.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Poll-August-2017.png 329w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Poll-August-2017-204x300.png 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most popular banks in South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The poll data reflects the recent trends seen in South Africa&#8217;s retail banking sector, where Capitec has continued to show massive growth in the uptake of customers, most recently adding 400,000 customers since February 2017 to become the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/189420\/capitec-is-now-the-second-biggest-bank-in-south-africa\/\">second biggest bank in the country<\/a><\/strong> by this metric.<\/p>\n<p>Capitec attributes its growth to its simple, straight-forward banking model, where it offers one account, with simple, affordable transaction fees.<\/p>\n<p>Its success has forced South Africa&#8217;s other banks to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/189127\/the-cheapest-and-most-expensive-bank-accounts-in-south-africa\/\">compete more effectively<\/a><\/strong> in the same market segment, and has led to Absa and FNB in particular to launch entry-level accounts that target Capitec&#8217;s market directly.<\/p>\n<p>Where Capitec still lags is in &#8216;full service&#8217; banking options, where the group does not yet offer home loans, vehicle financing and the like.
