{"id":192644,"date":"2017-08-16T08:06:34","date_gmt":"2017-08-16T06:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=192644"},"modified":"2017-08-16T08:06:34","modified_gmt":"2017-08-16T06:06:34","slug":"5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-123","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/192644\/5-important-things-happening-in-south-africa-today-123\/","title":{"rendered":"5 important things happening in South Africa today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/companies\/energy\/2017-08-16-exclusive-more-eskom-bosses-have-been-suspended-say-sources\/\">More heads are rolling at Eskom over contract irregularities surrounding business with Trillian, Business Day reports<\/a><\/strong> (subscription needed).\u00a0Eskom\u2019s head of procurement, Edwin Mabelane, and the acting commercial GM, Charles Kalima, were suspended this week &#8211; this follows the company&#8217;s auditors flagging former acting CEO Matshela Koko and former CEO Brian Molefe for irregularities as well.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC is waging a war with itself, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/politics\/2017-08-16-anc-acts-over-boycott-and-dissidents\/\">at least seven MPs &#8211; some who support president Zuma and some who oppose him &#8211; facing disciplinary action relating to the motion of no confidence<\/a><\/strong>. Meanwhile, other MPs, including Faith Muthambi, will also <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.za\/2017\/08\/15\/mps-who-snubbed-makhosi-khozas-parly-meeting-will-be-discipline_a_23078110\/?utm_hp_ref=za-homepage\">face action for shirking their duty and snubbing a portfolio committee meeting<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/2017-08-16-breaking-taxi-protests-rattle-tshwane\/\">Taxi drivers are causing havoc in Pretoria today, engaging in an unplanned and unsanctioned strike in the area, damaging cars and threatening violence against those who approach them<\/a><\/strong>. The strikes are considered illegal, and the police have said they will take action, accordingly. According to a pamphlet notice sent out on Tuesday, the strike is over heavy law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2017\/08\/16\/mkhwebane-in-firing-line-following-court-ruling\">Following the High Court delivering a scathing judgement against Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane&#8217;s call to change the SARB&#8217;s mandate, questions have risen as to her fitness to hold office<\/a><\/strong>. Despite the criticism, legal experts do not believe it is enough to have her removed.
