{"id":195816,"date":"2017-08-31T18:34:15","date_gmt":"2017-08-31T16:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=195816"},"modified":"2017-08-31T18:34:15","modified_gmt":"2017-08-31T16:34:15","slug":"3-south-african-billionaires-who-donated-their-fortune-to-charity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/195816\/3-south-african-billionaires-who-donated-their-fortune-to-charity\/","title":{"rendered":"3 South African billionaires who donated their fortune to charity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Billionaires globally are joining the likes of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet in pledging to donate their fortunes to philanthropic causes &#8211; and several South African billionaires have done the same in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jannie Mouton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week billionaire Jannie Mouton donated R1.072 billion ($82 million) in PSG Group shares to his personal charity, the Jannie Mouton Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Founder and chairman of PSG Group, Mouton was earlier this year listed as the newest dollar billionaire in South Africa by Forbes in its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/165749\/meet-the-boere-buffett-south-africas-newest-dollar-billionaire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Billionaire List for 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mouton, known as the \u201cBoere Buffett\u201d for his successes on the stock market, founded PSG Group in 1995 and has seen it grow into one of the country\u2019s biggest business success stories.<\/p>\n<p>PSG is an investment holding company with investments in a wide variety of sectors, including financial services, banking, private equity, agriculture and education.<\/p>\n<p>In June last year, Mouton <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/126303\/sa-billionaire-donates-r50-million-to-stellenbosch-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">donated R50 million<\/a> towards the building of a new Centre for Teaching and Learning at his alumnus, Stellenbosch University (SU).<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Jannie-Mouton.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-165761\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Jannie-Mouton.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Jannie-Mouton.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Jannie-Mouton-300x188.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Allan Gray<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was reported in 2016 that Allan Gray, who is reportedly worth\u00a0$1.85 billion, along with his family gave away their entire controlling stake of the Allan Gray investment company and its offshore partner Orbis to charity.<\/p>\n<p>Gray founded his Cape Town-based investment management firm Allan Gray Limited in 1973. He then started the company after earning his MBA from Harvard and spending eight years at Fidelity Investments in the US.<\/p>\n<p>He founded another asset manager, Orbis Investment Management, in 1989 in Bermuda, now his primary residence, noted Forbes.<\/p>\n<p>He also founded the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation with a personal gift of $130 million; the foundation, which provides grants for secondary and tertiary education to emerging business leaders, also receives 7% of the taxed profits of Allan Gray Limited.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2015, Gray announced that he would eventually donate the bulk of his wealth to charity.<\/p>\n<p>According to a letter to his shareholders, Gray transferred control of Allan Gray Limited and Orbis to the Allan &amp;
