{"id":196488,"date":"2017-09-05T07:45:08","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T05:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=196488"},"modified":"2017-09-05T09:25:13","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T07:25:13","slug":"final-rules-on-data-expiry-expected-to-be-in-effect-as-early-as-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/196488\/final-rules-on-data-expiry-expected-to-be-in-effect-as-early-as-october\/","title":{"rendered":"Final rules on data expiry expected to be in effect as early as October"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The final regulations on the expiry of data bundles will be in place by the end of October, according to\u00a0minister of of telecommunications and postal services, Siyabonga Cwele.<\/p>\n<p>Minister Cwele was responding to a parliamentary question from the IFP\u2019s Liezl van der Merwe, who wanted to know if the department had made any progress in the past 12 months to reduce the cost to communicate in South Africa, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/mercury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mercury<\/a><\/strong> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitial interventions will ensure provisions to ensure that all segments of data bundles do not automatically expire after 30 days but have a cascading scale as proposed in Icasa\u2019s draft regulations,&#8221; said Cwele.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final regulations will be in place by the end of October,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However speaking to The Mercury, Icasa would not commit to any deadline, saying it was still accepting submissions on the draft regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of our processes we are receiving submissions from civil society, the operators and all interested parties, and the deadline for that is September 19.
