Six South African universities have been ranked among the top 500 tertiary institutions in the world for offering the best employment opportunities and employer-student relations in 2018.<\/p>\n
The rankings, compiled by\u00a0Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global higher education analysts and career advice specialist, named\u00a0Stanford in the US as the world-leader in this measure, followed by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Harvard University.<\/p>\n
US universities take five of the top-10 places, and 31 top-100 places – while UK institutes, the\u00a0Universities of Cambridge (6th overall) and Oxford (8th) were ranked most highly by employers.<\/p>\n
Previously the ranking only looked at the top 300 institutions in the world, but for the 2017\/18 list it extended its assessment to the top 500 universities. In the 2016\/17 rank, only two South African universities made the cut.<\/p>\n
The ranking does not give official placement to those outside the top 100, but does provide ranges.<\/p>\n
For South Africa, the University of Cape Town again ranked highest, between 101st and 110th – the only local university to crack the top 200.<\/p>\n
Wits university was ranked within the top 250 (between 201st and 250th), followed by the University of Pretoria in the top 300 (between 251st and 300th).<\/p>\n
The other South African universities which made it into the top 500 include Stellenbosch University, the University of Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu Natal.<\/p>\n
According to the QS researchers, its methodology for this particular category is moving away from self-reported data from the universities themselves, while also increasing the ranking’s scope.<\/p>\n
Each institution\u2019s score is comprised of five carefully-chosen indicators. Employer Reputation excepted, all metrics used are currently unique to the QS Graduate Employability Rankings.<\/p>\n
