{"id":198910,"date":"2017-09-14T16:43:05","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T14:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=198910"},"modified":"2017-09-14T16:43:05","modified_gmt":"2017-09-14T14:43:05","slug":"the-r90-a-minute-phone-scam-that-mobile-operators-are-warning-parliament-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/198910\/the-r90-a-minute-phone-scam-that-mobile-operators-are-warning-parliament-about\/","title":{"rendered":"The R90-a-minute phone scam that mobile operators are warning parliament about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking in a presentation on the upcoming\u00a0Cybercrimes and Cybersecurity Bill, Cell C, Telkom and Vodacom encouraged parliament to include offences such as cyber-fraud and cyber-forgery in the draft bill, as it would make it easier to prosecute fraudsters.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2017\/09\/14\/mobile-operators-warns-mps-of-wangiri-cyber-fraud-scam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EWN<\/a><\/strong>, the mobile operators were specifically concerned about the &#8220;worldwide phenomenon&#8221; known as <em>Wangiri fraud<\/em>, which they said was costing their users a significant amount of money.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/220970-beware-international-one-ring-missed-calls-can-cost-you-hundreds-of-rand.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wangiri is a form of phone fraud\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>which originated in Japan. The name translates to \u201cone and cut\u201d, and comes from fraudsters calling your phone, letting it ring once, and then disconnecting their call.<\/p>\n<p>If you return the missed call, you are tricked into calling a premium-rated number that charges exorbitant rates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They can run up a bill of R60, R70, R80, R90 a minute and what these criminals do is to try and keep the victim on the line for as long as possible, thereby generating money for themselves,&#8221; said\u00a0Cell C\u2019s Jacqueline Fick.<\/p>\n<p>When she was asked by an African National Congress lawmaker about what operators are doing to deal with Wangiri Fraud, Fick explained that spreading awareness and education were extremely important.<\/p>\n<p>Fick said operators are able to block illicit calls once they&#8217;ve identified the phone numbers involved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What mobile operators are doing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/221292-what-vodacom-and-mtn-are-doing-about-wangiri-fraud-in-south-africa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyBroadband <\/a><\/strong>earlier this year, all of South Africa&#8217;s major operators acknowledged the issue and said they were actively monitoring for the scam on their networks.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom and Cell C said users will only be billed if they return the call, and there is no danger in answering calls from international numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C said it\u00a0is unlikely that you will answer the calls in time, though, as their purpose is to get you to call back.<\/p>\n<p>MTN said it is monitoring these calls daily and is suspending the number ranges so customers cannot dial them.<\/p>\n<p>It is also working with carrier services and originating operators to clamp down on the fraud.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/196488\/final-rules-on-data-expiry-expected-to-be-in-effect-as-early-as-october\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Final rules on data expiry expected to be in effect as early as October<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking in a presentation on the upcoming\u00a0Cybercrimes and Cybersecurity Bill, Cell C, Telkom and Vodacom encouraged parliament to include offences such as cyber-fraud and cyber-forgery in the draft bill, as it would make it easy to prosecute fraudsters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":187867,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[42,26,65,27],"class_list":["post-198910","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-telecommunications","tag-cell-c","tag-headline","tag-telkom","tag-vodacom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/198910","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=198910"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/198910\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":198928,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/198910\/revisions\/198928"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/187867"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=198910"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=198910"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=198910"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
