{"id":198944,"date":"2017-09-15T07:38:37","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T05:38:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=198944"},"modified":"2017-09-15T07:38:37","modified_gmt":"2017-09-15T05:38:37","slug":"treasury-amends-double-tax-for-people-earning-money-outside-the-country-following-complaints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/198944\/treasury-amends-double-tax-for-people-earning-money-outside-the-country-following-complaints\/","title":{"rendered":"Treasury amends &#8220;double-tax&#8221; for people earning money outside the country, following complaints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Treasury has agreed to withdraw its controversial proposal to repeal a six-month tax exemption on foreign income earned abroad.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/national\/2017-09-14-treasury-agrees-to-amend-183-day-tax-exemption-with-r1m-threshold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TimesLive<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a0it instead plans to introduce a R1 million threshold before taxes are imposed, in specified circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>These changes will now also only come into effect on 1 March 2020, instead of the originally slated 1 March 2019 implementation date.<\/p>\n<p>Treasury received more than 1,300 objections to the proposal, mainly from South Africans working in low-or no-tax countries in the Middle East, who would be most affected by it.<\/p>\n<p>Nigel Green, founder and CEO of financial consultancy of the deVere Group called the removal of the exemptions &#8220;draconian&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe move is totally unjust and breaks the cornerstone principal of taxation: that the taxpayer receives government services for their taxes, such as healthcare, education, roads and police services,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese plans are highly discriminatory.
