{"id":199196,"date":"2017-09-17T07:07:49","date_gmt":"2017-09-17T05:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=199196"},"modified":"2017-09-17T07:20:41","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T05:20:41","slug":"zuma-unlikely-to-ever-have-his-day-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/199196\/zuma-unlikely-to-ever-have-his-day-in-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Zuma unlikely to ever have his day in court: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and lawyers for President Jacob Zuma are reportedly considering a plan to ensure that it will be many years before the country\u2019s leader gets to have his day in court.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24.com\/SouthAfrica\/News\/why-zuma-wont-get-his-day-in-court-20170916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Press<\/a><\/strong>, the plan emerged earlier this week after\u00a0Zuma\u2019s advocate, Kemp J Kemp,\u00a0conceded that the decision by former prosecutions boss Mokotedi Mpshe to drop the 783 corruption, money-laundering and racketeering charges against Zuma was \u201cirrational\u201d and should be set aside.<\/p>\n<p>Kemp said that \u00a0Zuma wanted an opportunity to make fresh representations if the NPA decided to charge him again \u2013 leaving the matter\u00a0in the hands of National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shaun Abrahams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the City Press,\u00a0Abrahams has already informally spoken to top public prosecutors to ensure that Zuma never sees his day in court.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the plan, the NPA would first study the judgment, after which\u00a0Zuma will be allowed to make his representations, which the prosecutions authority will entertain.<\/p>\n<p>During this process, the NPA is also expecting legal challenges from the DA, which will be appealed to the highest courts if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Thereafter, the sources said, Zuma would apply for a permanent stay of prosecution, which Abrahams would be expected to grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to be a lengthy and protracted legal battle.
