The City of London has revoked popular ride-sharing service Uber’s licence to operate in the city.<\/p>\n
The decision is expected to affect close to 3.5 million users as well 40,000 drivers who use the app in the city.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the city said that it had made the decision because of “Uber\u2019s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility\u201d.<\/p>\n
The city specifically highlighted concerns over Uber\u2019s use of Greyball, software that can be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to its app and undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want London to be at the forefront of innovation and new technology and to be a natural home for exciting new companies that help Londoners by providing a better and more affordable service,” said London mayor, Sadiq Khan.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, all companies in London must play by the rules and adhere to the high standards we expect \u2013particularly when it comes to the safety of customers. Providing an innovative service must not be at the expense of customer safety and security.”<\/p>\n
The current licence expires on 30 September but Uber has 21 days to appeal and can continue to operate until that process is complete, reports The Guardian<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Uber has already indicated that it plans to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n
