{"id":204548,"date":"2017-10-12T09:34:28","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T07:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=204548"},"modified":"2017-10-12T09:34:28","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T07:34:28","slug":"how-much-the-average-south-african-works-in-a-week-compared-to-the-rest-of-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/204548\/how-much-the-average-south-african-works-in-a-week-compared-to-the-rest-of-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"How much the average South African works in a week compared to the rest of the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>International workforce company, the ManpowerGroup, has released its latest Total Workforce Index.<\/p>\n<p>The index\u00a0uses a proprietary algorithm to measure the relative ease of sourcing, hiring and retaining a workforce in competing labor markets around the world.<\/p>\n<p>It does this by compiling\u00a0more than 90 key factors which relate to the availability, cost efficiency, regulation and productivity of the workforce of each country.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa ranked 24th out of the total ranking of 75 countries internationally, and 14th in a ranking of\u00a0European, Middle East, and African countries. It ranked highly for cost efficiency and regulation, but lost points due to poor market maturity and availability of skilled labour.<\/p>\n<p>The report also found that the country&#8217;s workforce still has a number of hurdles to overcome to be more competitive, globally, with just\u00a050% of the workforce being proficient in English, and only 27.6% considered to be white collar or &#8220;highly skilled&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><em>Click on images to enlarge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Availability.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-204572\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Availability.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Availability.jpg 1129w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Availability-300x116.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Availability-768x297.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Availability-1024x395.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It further found that the average South African worker works exactly <strong>9 hours a day<\/strong> &#8211; just under an hour more than other African, European and Middle-Eastern (EMEA) countries.<\/p>\n<p>This equates to an average work week of <strong>45 hours<\/strong> for South Africans, compared to 41.6 hours in EMEA countries.<\/p>\n<p>This means that while the stereotypical 9:00 &#8211;
