{"id":205312,"date":"2017-10-16T09:58:35","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T07:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=205312"},"modified":"2017-10-16T09:59:13","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T07:59:13","slug":"busting-the-myths-for-businesses-seeking-to-switch-to-mac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/industry-news\/205312\/busting-the-myths-for-businesses-seeking-to-switch-to-mac\/","title":{"rendered":"Busting the myths for businesses seeking to switch to Mac"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A simple fact of life is that human beings, as a rule, do not like change.<\/p>\n<p>By this same token however, we also know that change is necessary for progress.<\/p>\n<p>Business owners and decision makers wanting to improve efficiencies often consider switching from PC to Mac, but are sometimes deterred by a number of concerns, particularly by (what they perceive to be) the <em>schlep<\/em> involved.<\/p>\n<p>Gaynor MacArthur, Director of Sales at Apple Premium Reseller Digicape, admits that while she doesn\u2019t blame business owners for being hesitant as any switch may temporarily disrupt operations, \u201cit is well worth it in the long run from a cost and efficiency perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacArthur lists a few common myths that often deter business owners when considering switching to Mac &#8211; and provides facts as to why they shouldn\u2019t be reluctant to take the plunge.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong><em>\u201cIt\u2019s too expensive\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A large concern that businesses have when moving over to Mac are the initial setup costs.<\/p>\n<p>And while an Apple device may be more expensive than your standard laptop, one has to take into account the lifetime cost of the device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApple\u2019s strategy has always been to build quality machines with top-of-the-range specs, designed to last a long time, says MacArthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsider the purchase price a percentage of the lifetime cost of that device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA PC\u2019s purchase price is around 18% of its lifetime cost, while a Mac\u2019s purchase price is approximately 50%. What this means is that you will generally spend far more money on maintaining your PC than you would a Mac, and maintenance costs will far exceed your initial outlay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacArthur cites IBM as an example. \u201cIn 2015, IBM replaced their Window\u2019s PCs with Mac, and has since then deployed it to 100 000 of its employees (Source: Jamf white paper)\u201d. IMB <a href=\"http:\/\/tracker.mybroadband.co.za\/\/track.php?page=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuamFtZi5jb20vYmxvZy9kZWJhdGUtb3Zlci1pYm0tY29uZmlybXMtdGhhdC1tYWNzLWFyZS01MzUtbGVzcy1leHBlbnNpdmUtdGhhbi1wY3Mv?source=Free value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calculated that the decision to switch from PC to Mac has saved them around $273 &#8211; $535 per device<\/a> (based on an estimated four-year lifespan), potentially saving the company, on average, around $40 000 000 since the decision was first implemented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMac also has a far higher retained value over a five-year period.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong><em>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t work on our network\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Apple uses <em>Server Message Block<\/em> (SMB) as its file sharing protocol \u2013 the standard networking protocol utilised by Windows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means that Apple devices work seamlessly on a traditional business network. And because macOS is built on top of UNIX \u2013 a multi-user, multi-tasking computer operating system \u2013 it supports all the standard internet network stacks,\u201d explains MacArthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApple has also partnered with Cisco to ensure iOS devices work seamlessly across Cisco networks (an industry leader in enterprise networking.)\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong><em>\u201cIt\u2019s not a business tool\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMicrosoft developed Word, Excel and PowerPoint on the Mac first; establishing Mac as a leader in business software,\u201d MacArthur explains.<\/p>\n<p>Apple also reinstated its role in the business sector when it switched to the Intel processor in 2006, making it possible to install Windows natively on a Mac.<\/p>\n<p>MacArthur adds, \u201cit was also the first time we could compare apples with apples (intentional pun!), and<a href=\"http:\/\/tracker.mybroadband.co.za\/\/track.php?page=aHR0cDovL21hc2hhYmxlLmNvbS8yMDE2LzA2LzI5L2ludGVsLW1hY3MtYXQtMTAvI0QwVDNldGFhSWtxbg?source=Free value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> MacBook Pro was voted the best \u2018Windows PC\u2019 for three years running<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are also security advantages.
