{"id":20551,"date":"2012-08-23T15:26:02","date_gmt":"2012-08-23T13:26:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=20551"},"modified":"2012-08-23T15:32:05","modified_gmt":"2012-08-23T13:32:05","slug":"telco-ad-wars-in-focus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/20551\/telco-ad-wars-in-focus\/","title":{"rendered":"Telco ad wars in focus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Moerdyk, one of the top marketing leaders in the country, explained that while \u201cadvertising industry regulators argue that SA already allows comparative advertising, in truth, any comparisons made are couched in innuendo and really not allowed to go the whole hog\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While South Africa\u2019s largest telecommunications companies do not directly engage in comparative advertising, many marketing campaigns take aim at competitors without leaving too much to the imagination.<\/p>\n<p>These ads, where one telecoms player pokes fun at another, often generate a positive response from consumers who seem to appreciate strong competition between companies.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the more prominent advertisements where telecoms players promote their products with a thinly veiled reference to their competitor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Telkom taking on MWEB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MWEB\u2019s uncapped ADSL services, which were launched in May 2010, quickly gained traction in the ADSL market. At the time Telkom did not have any uncapped ADSL products, and decided to launch a marketing campaign against uncapped ADSL products.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2010 a Telkom newsletter titled \u201cBroadband: Put a cap on it\u201d warned consumers that &#8220;unlimited and unrestricted&#8221; Internet access is not what it purports to be. Telkom launched uncapped ADSL products the following year, and is now competing head-on with MWEB in the uncapped ADSL market.<\/p>\n<p>MWEB is now taking aim at Telkom in its latest television campaign, clearly showing that its service and support is superior to that of Telkom.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/urw_1OoicjE\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"599\" height=\"338\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Telkom poking fun at Neotel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Telkom has been very successful in securing billboards close to the Neotel offices, and then placing advertisements on these spots poking fun at Neotel. Here are two examples.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_57863\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/general\/57861-cool-sa-telecoms-ads-poking-fun-at-the-competition.html\/attachment\/telkom-billboard-outside-neotel-offices\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57863\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57863\" class=\"size-full wp-image-57863\" title=\"Telkom billboard outside Neotel offices\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Telkom-billboard-outside-Neotel-offices.jpg\" alt=\"Telkom billboard outside Neotel offices\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-57863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Telkom billboard outside Neotel offices<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_57865\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/general\/57861-cool-sa-telecoms-ads-poking-fun-at-the-competition.html\/attachment\/telkom-versus-neotel-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57865\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57865\" class=\"size-full wp-image-57865\" title=\"Telkom versus Neotel\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Telkom-versus-Neotel.jpg\" alt=\"Telkom versus Neotel\" width=\"600\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-57865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Telkom versus Neotel<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Neotel hitting back at Telkom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Neotel hit back at Telkom in its radio advertisements, highlighting that they pass savings on to their consumers while their biggest competitor (Telkom) does not.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7s1isi5Q-Ds\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In another advertisement, Neotel tells consumers that \u201cIt is cheaper to make a phone call from Neotel to our biggest competitor [Telkom] than it is for our biggest competitor to call themselves on their own network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kC3mRbp2dZI\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cell C bullying Vodacom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2011 Vodacom re-branded in a campaign which saw the company change its traditional blue and green colours to Vodafone\u2019s red branding.<\/p>\n<p>It did not take Cell C long to launch a campaign which poked fun at Vodacom, while at the same time promoting its new 900MHz HSPA+ broadband network.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s__eXllh2QI\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After Vodacom lodged a successful complaint against the Cell C advertisement at the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA), Cell C changed its campaign, but the message stayed the same.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UZKkC8PHYbo\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cell C hits MTN and Vodacom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Alan Knott-Craig took over at Cell C, the company launched a 99c rate for all calls. Cell C aggressively promoted their deal through a comprehensive marketing campaign, and took aim at Vodacom and MTN\u2019s discounted call promotions in its ads.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Si0U1c4zF1E\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>MTN hits back at Cell C<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MTN downplayed Cell C&#8217;s lower rates, arguing that it still offers a better value proposition to customers.
