{"id":20573,"date":"2012-08-24T12:34:18","date_gmt":"2012-08-24T10:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=20573"},"modified":"2012-08-24T12:37:20","modified_gmt":"2012-08-24T10:37:20","slug":"cool-sa-tech-companies-time-to-take-stock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/20573\/cool-sa-tech-companies-time-to-take-stock\/","title":{"rendered":"Cool SA tech companies: Time to take stock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In October 2010, MyBroadband published an article titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/15559-sa-tech-companies-to-watch.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SA Tech companies to watch<\/strong><\/a>\u201d, listing a handful of lesser-known companies which it felt were well-positioned for growth.<\/p>\n<p>The companies listed were Nology, Neology, ARC Telecoms, Cerebra, Altech Technology Concepts and Quirk.<\/p>\n<p>Two years down the line, it is time to see whether the list of companies published by MyBroadband showed the growth which was expected, or whether they disappointed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nology is a supplier of broadband, networking and communication solutions, and is the exclusive distributor of Billion and Airlive equipment in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The company was split in two during September 2010, when Nology Distibution was formed as a new company to focus on the channel and retail markets. Nology Solutions remains focused on the ISP, telco and VoIP markets for customised solutions and services.<\/p>\n<p>The split seems to be working well for the company. Nology grew its revenue by 30% over the last year, and boost profitability by 50%. This and other strategies are paying off for the company.<\/p>\n<p>Cerebra showed exceptional growth since 2010. In 2011, the company grew its revenue by 90%, and the company is confident it will grow its revenue by another 50% this year.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last two years, the company has grown the number of staff members from 12 to 32, and also moved into new offices to accommodate the growth.<\/p>\n<p>Cerebra CEO, Mike Stopforth said that the company expects to show continued growth in future. \u201cWe continue to attract exciting clients and refine our strategic communication offering. The company was acquired by Altech, which further boosted its fortunes.<\/p>\n<p>The company has shown great growth since 2010. Between February 2010 and February 2012, Altech Technology Concepts grew revenues by 80%. Over the same period, the company experienced a 67% growth in head count.<\/p>\n<p>ATC further transitioned from a second-tier ISP to a first-tier ISP and built its own core, fully-redundant network with POPs in London, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.<\/p>\n<p>In March, ATC integrated with Autopage, and former ATC CEO, Wayne de Nobrega, said that the company expects continued growth going forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cATC will continue to extend [its] penetration into the business market and extend [its] range of services, while at the same time [it] will start addressing to consumer market through the integrated AAPC\/ATC entity,\u201d de Nobrega said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quirk<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20578\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Rob-Stokes-in-the-early-days-of-Quirk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20578\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20578\" title=\"Rob Stokes in the early days of Quirk\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Rob-Stokes-in-the-early-days-of-Quirk.jpg\" alt=\"Rob Stokes in the early days of Quirk\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Rob-Stokes-in-the-early-days-of-Quirk.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Rob-Stokes-in-the-early-days-of-Quirk-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rob Stokes in the early days of Quirk<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Quirk eMarketing is one of the largest new media companies and marketing companies in the country, with offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg and London.<\/p>\n<p>Since October 2010, Quirk has made great strides. The company grew its revenue by around 200%; increased its headcount by 150%; and added 4 companies to the group through research and development and acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>Quirk founder, Rob Stokes is bullish about Quirk\u2019s future as well. \u201cIt won&#8217;t be as [fast-paced] as the last two years (that&#8217;s impossible to keep up in a service business), but we expect to grow 70% year-on-year in the next 12 months,\u201d said Stokes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neology<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20579\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Regardt-van-de-vyver.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20579\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20579\" title=\"Regardt van de Vyver\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Regardt-van-de-vyver.jpg\" alt=\"Regardt van de Vyver\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Regardt-van-de-vyver.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Regardt-van-de-vyver-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Regardt van de Vyver<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Neology is a small tech company founded and run by three techies. Neology has close links with IPINX, another tech startup, and its network solutions are behind many services offered in the local and African telecoms markets.<\/p>\n<p>Neology has shown good growth over the last two years despite numerous challenges. \u201cWe brought on-board a number of new key accounts, and launched our niche datacenter. As at June 2012, the data centre is at 50% capacity and going strong,\u201d said Neology CEO, Regardt van de Vyver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur caching platforms are now deployed in 7 countries, and our radius and billing platforms (both hosted and on-site) have experienced good growth. Our managed capacity and network support services exceeded even our own expectations and will certainly be a focus for us in the coming year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company has boosted revenues by 36% since 2010, and is confident that this growth will continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith some planned expansion into new areas, and a clear resurgence of telecoms in Africa, we do expect growth in the coming year.
