{"id":206092,"date":"2017-10-19T07:40:22","date_gmt":"2017-10-19T05:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=206092"},"modified":"2017-10-19T07:40:22","modified_gmt":"2017-10-19T05:40:22","slug":"zuma-gigaba-and-mbalulas-information-exposed-in-sas-worst-data-leak-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/it-services\/206092\/zuma-gigaba-and-mbalulas-information-exposed-in-sas-worst-data-leak-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Zuma, Gigaba and Mbalula&#8217;s information exposed in SA&#8217;s worst data leak: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The personal information of some of South Africa&#8217;s top politicians have been found inside the masterdeeds data leak which has been named the worst in the country&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/2017-10-18-top-real-estate-company-admits-to-being-unwitting-source-of-countrys-largest-personal-data-breach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TimesLive<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0the estimated income\u201a addresses and cellphone numbers of the likes of president Jacob Zuma\u201a finance minister Malusi Gigaba and police minister Fikile Mbalula have been confirmed as part of the breach.<\/p>\n<p>Property company\u00a0Jigsaw Holdings, which includes Aida\u201a ERA and Realty-1, have confirmed that the leak originated from one of its servers, but stated that they \u00a0had \u201cabsolutely no idea\u201d as to why the information was on the server in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Aida CEO Braam de Jager said the information\u201a which was available for download until Wednesday morning\u201a was bought from credit bureau Dracore in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>It contains, among other things, the ID numbers\u201a age\u201a location\u201a marital status\u201a occupation\u201a estimated income\u201a physical address and cellphone numbers of millions of South Africans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to check if you have been hacked<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Security expert Troy Hunt has loaded all of the email addresses found in the leaked South African database onto his site\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/haveibeenpwned.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Have I Been Pwned<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By typing your email address into the site&#8217;s search bar, Have I Been Pwned can ascertain whether your information has been leaked as part of the massive South African breach or similar international leaks.<\/p>\n<p>However, Hunt warned that there\u00a0were only 2.2 million email addresses in the database, but tens of millions of actual identities in the source database.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis South African data breach is one of the worst I\u2019ve ever seen on many levels,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe data included extensive personal attributes such as names, addresses, ethnicities, genders, birth dates, government-issued personal identification numbers, and 2.2 million email addresses.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/205730\/30-million-south-africans-exposed-in-massive-data-leak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Private data of 30 million South Africans exposed in massive leak<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The income, cellphone numbers and personal addresses of some of South Africa&#8217;s top politicians have been found in the massive data leak &#8211;
